“Now,” she said, “we go to a party.”
“What party?”
“Your parents are hosting a ‘Family Unity Dinner’ tonight at the Riverside Banquet Hall,” Evelyn said. “It’s been planned for months. A celebration of family values and togetherness.”
The irony was so sharp it could draw blood.
“I can’t go there,” I said.
