job at a medical clinic’s front desk, complained about the hours, and kept going anyway. One evening she appeared at my apartment with a grocery bag containing pasta, sauce, coffee, and a jar of fancy peanut butter she knew I liked.
“It’s a thank you,” she said, not meeting my eyes. “I guess.”
