it once, hard, and found Mara curled beside the bed, one arm around her stomach. Purple bruises darkened her cheek and collarbone. Blood marked the corner of her mouth. Her breathing came in thin, broken pulls.
Her eyes opened.
“Baby,” she whispered.
I dropped beside her, checked her pulse, and kept my voice steady while rage burned through me.
